DOCUMENTING AND CELEBRATING

OUR CONNECTION WITH FRESHWATER

Rivers and wetlands are the arteries of planet Earth. They are critical for our water security and wellbeing, but are also home to an incredible, but rarely seen, diversity of life. In recent decades freshwaters have become more threatened than any other ecosystems on Earth and their aquatic species are disappearing faster than ever before. We have arrived at a crossroads where bending back the curve of biodiversity loss hinges on freshwater awareness, compassion and advocacy.

I am a freshwater conservation biologist passionate about revealing the untold stories of rivers and wetlands. Through photography and film, I hope to raise the profile of these hidden ecosystems, celebrate their conservation heroes and inspire deeper connections between people and freshwater life.

ABOUT ME

Jeremy Shelton - freshwater scientist and visual storyteller based in Cape Town, South Africa

After a decade of research and academia, I picked up a camera and quickly realised the power of images and visual storytelling in communicating science and affecting conservation action. South Africa has a rich diversity of freshwater life, but most of the time it remains hidden beneath the reflective surface of our rivers, lakes and wetlands. People only care about things that they know, so raising the profile of freshwater life is the first step toward a stronger freshwater conservation movement in South Africa.
